The first son, Henry Vandyke Carter was born in 1831 in Hull. After time at Hull Grammer School he studied medicine at St George's Hospital in London. He then went on to the Royal College of Surgeouns to study Human and Comparative Anatomy. Henry Vandyke Carter shared his father's talent and while working for Henry Gray in 1856 he started the illustration for Henry Gray's Anatomy.
For the years to follow Henry V Carter worked in India eventually becoming Principle of Grant Medical College before retiring in l888 as Honorary Surgeon to the Queen. He died in Scarborough in 1897 and is buried in Dean Road Cemetery.
